Solar panels on their own shut off when the grid goes down, so a house with panels goes dark with the rest of the street. A home battery and its gateway change that. When the grid drops, the gateway separates your house from it and the battery runs the circuits you picked. It can go in with panels, new or existing. It can also go in on its own and charge from the grid.

Choose what stays on

A backup list is usually short, along these lines:

  • The refrigerator and the freezer
  • The Wi-Fi router, and outlets for phones and laptops
  • Lights in the kitchen and the bedrooms
  • The gas furnace's blower, so the heat still runs on a winter night
  • The garage door opener

Central air conditioning and an EV charger draw far more. Either can be backed up, on a larger battery or more than one, and each raises the price.

How the battery is sized

We start from your list and how long you want it carried through an outage. On a sunny day, panels refill the battery as it runs. At night, or on a house with no panels, it carries what it stored.

When the grid goes down

  1. The gateway senses the outage and separates the house from the grid.
  2. The battery takes over the backup circuits.
  3. If you have panels, they keep running behind the battery and refill it in daylight.
  4. When the grid comes back, the gateway reconnects the house by itself.

What moves the price

  • How many circuits stay on, and whether the air conditioning is one of them
  • How many batteries that takes
  • Your main panel, if it needs an upgrade or the backup circuits move to a panel of their own
  • Where the battery mounts, and how far that is from the main panel
  • Whether panels are part of the job

What your written price lists

  • Each backup circuit, by name
  • The battery by maker and model, and how many
  • The cash price beside the monthly payment

The price comes back by the next business day. If you go ahead, the roof check comes before anything is signed, and any change it makes comes to you in writing with the reason.

Questions about backup

Can I have a battery without solar panels?

Yes. It charges from the grid and holds that power for an outage. Say so when you ask for the price, and it is priced as the battery alone.

Will it run the air conditioning?

It can, with enough battery behind it. Central air is one of the biggest loads in a house, so ask for the price both ways and compare the totals.

How long will the battery last in an outage?

That depends on what is running. A refrigerator and the Wi-Fi draw little, and a battery carries them far longer than a whole house with the air on. With panels on the roof, a sunny day refills it. Your price names the circuits it was sized for.

Which batteries do you install?

Tesla Powerwall 3, Enphase IQ Battery 5P and FranklinWH aPower 2. Solar batteries says how each fits a house, with panels or without.
