Panels off for a new roof

Solar panel removal and reinstall for a new roof

We take the panels down before the roofer starts and put them back when the roof is done. Tell us when the roofer starts. The price comes back by the next business day.

No sales visit to see it.

A new roof under solar is two jobs on one calendar. The panels come off and wait while the roofer works, then go back onto the new roof on new flashing at each mount. The roofing is between you and your roofer. Our part is the panels.

When to call

As soon as the roofer gives you a start date, or before, if you are still choosing a roofer. With our price in hand early, the removal and reinstall can sit beside the roofing quotes when you compare them.

How it goes

  1. Send the address and the roofer's start date. Photos help, and the form takes them: the panels, taken from the ground or through a window, and the inverter if it hangs on a wall.
  2. Your written price comes back. Once you sign, the price is fixed.
  3. Before the roofer starts, we shut the system down and take the panels and rails off.
  4. The panels stay off the roof until the new roof is finished.
  5. When the roof is done, the mounts go back on new flashing and the panels go back on. We reconnect the system and check it is producing before we leave.
  6. Your final bill matches the price you signed.

What moves the price

  • How many panels there are, and how many roof planes they sit on
  • The roofing at each mount: tile takes longer than shingle
  • How the system is wired: a microinverter under each panel, or one inverter on the wall
  • The height and pitch of the roof, and the way up to it
  • Whether the rails and mounts go back as they are, or need changing to suit the new roof
  • A battery or other equipment that has to be shut down and brought back with it

Pricing it before you go solar

If you are pricing new panels on a roof that won't outlast them, we say so before you sign. Your written price then carries the removal and reinstall for when the re-roof comes, so you know that cost before you commit. If the re-roof can go first, we install on the new roof instead. Solar panel installation covers the rest of that job.

Questions about removal and reinstall

Do you take down panels another company installed?

Yes. Removal and reinstall works the same whoever put the system up. Tell us the make of the panels and the inverter if you know them.

How long are the panels off the roof?

For as long as the re-roof takes. The roofer's schedule sets it, and we come back once the roof is ready for the mounts.

Can I change the roofing material?

Yes. Going from tile to shingle, for example, changes the mounts, and that goes on the price before you sign.

Can the roofer work around the panels?

Not on the part of the roof under them. The roofing under the array has to be replaced as well, which is why the panels come off.
