  • LADWP and EdisonEvery house priced by its own utility's rules.

What a battery is worth comes down to the utility on your bill. On Edison, evening power is the expensive kind: from 4 to 9 it costs more than the credit your panels earned sending power back at midday, and stored power covers those hours. On LADWP, what you send back is credited against your own bill, so there a battery mostly buys you power through an outage.

The batteries we install

  • Tesla Powerwall 3, with a solar inverter built in
  • Enphase IQ Battery 5P, which works alongside the Enphase IQ8 microinverters we install
  • FranklinWH aPower 2, which can sit beside many existing systems

Your written price names each battery by model, and the circuits it keeps running.

Adding a battery to solar you already have

Tell us about the system you have. The inverter's make and roughly the year the system went in are enough to start. If the inverter hangs on a wall, a photo of its label on the form helps. Some systems take a battery beside the inverter they have. Others need the inverter replaced at the same time, and that replacement goes on your price as its own line.

Your utility has to approve the change before the battery is switched on.

What moves the price

  • How many batteries: one carries a set of circuits, and more carry more of the house for longer
  • Where it mounts: a garage wall beside the main panel is the shortest run, and a side yard farther off adds conduit and wire
  • Your main panel, if it needs an upgrade or the backup circuits need a panel of their own
  • The inverter you have now, and whether it stays
  • Whether the battery comes with new panels or joins an existing system

What your written price shows

  • Two totals, solar alone and solar plus a battery, when you are pricing both
  • The battery as its own line, with the maker and the model
  • The circuits it keeps running when the grid goes down
  • The cash price beside the monthly payment

How it goes

  1. Send the address and say whether solar is on the roof now. Your battery price comes back by the next business day.
  2. The roof check, if you go ahead. We open the main panel and look at where the battery would mount. If that changes the job, the new figure and the reason come in writing before you sign.
  3. You sign, and the price is fixed.
  4. We mount the battery and its gateway, the box that separates the house from the grid in an outage, and wire in the circuits you chose. Your final bill matches the price you signed.

Questions about batteries

Will a battery run the house in an outage?

Yes, on the circuits it is wired to. Panels alone shut off when the grid goes down. With a battery, the gateway separates the house from the grid and the backup circuits keep running. Choosing them is covered on home battery backup.

How long is a battery covered?

For its maker's term, which differs by model. Your written price prints the term for the model you pick. If the battery fails inside it, we file the claim with the maker and do the swap.

Can I leave the battery off?

Yes. Compare the two totals on your price, and leave it off if the gap isn't worth it to you.
